How to become an instructor
Teaching can be immensely rewarding, and if you are passionate about driving, could be the perfect career path for you. Driving instructors should:
- Have patience
- Enjoy working with people, and have good people skills
- Be reliable
- Be confident and have good theory and practical knowledge
- Love driving!
To charge people for driving lessons, you must be an ADI (approved driving instructor). Check if you can become a driving instructor.
You must:
- Be 21 years old or over
- Have held a driving license for more than 3 years
You must also hold a manual license if you want to teach in a manual car.
You application can be refused if you have:
- Been banned from driving
- 5 or more penalty points
- Been convicted of any non-motoring offences
The whole process usually takes 3-6 months and compromises of 3 tests:
- The theory test
- The driving ability test
- The instructional ability test
